Pair of Portuguese five-light candelabra in 916-th silver – Porto, circa 1940 – Regency style
An impressive pair of Portuguese candelabras in solid 916-th silver, hallmarked in Porto, made around 1940 in a pure English Regency style.
Each candelabrum rests on a wide circular base decorated with gadroons, extended by a tall, tapered, and fluted shaft. The upper section features a particularly sturdy mount composed of four intertwined arms, forming a five-light arrangement with the central candleholder.
The arms, solidly constructed and generously proportioned, intertwine around the central shaft, forming a series of curves characteristic of these models. The candle holders feature a gadrooning and molding pattern that harmonizes with that of the base and shaft.
The fifth light is positioned in the center. It is topped by a removable snuffer, which fits over the central candleholder and, when in place, serves as the decorative finial of the candelabra. When removed, it exposes the fifth candleholder and allows the candelabra to be used as a five-light candelabra.
The arm mount is fully removable, allowing each of the two elements to be used as a single-light candleholder. This detachable design is particularly practical while maintaining the proportions of the candelabrum when displayed on its own.
The quality of construction is particularly evident in the thickness and sturdiness of the arms—a feature that is especially appreciated in this type of candelabrum. Weighing a total of 4,612 grams of 916-thousandths silver, this pair stands out for its substantial use of material and particularly robust construction.
