Louis XVI Mahogany "billet Doux," Stamped "canabas"

Artist: Canabas

Rare love note stamped "J. Canabas" – Louis XVI period

An elegant small ladies’ cabinet in mahogany and mahogany veneer, stamped J. CANABAS, featuring a highly understated architectural silhouette characteristic of the refined taste of the late 18th century.

The front features a drawer with gilded metal pull knobs, topped by a flap that opens to reveal a built-in mirror.
The interior features several compartments designed for storing small personal items, writing supplies, and correspondence, as well as its original mirror inside the flap.

The piece features paneled sides framed by moldings, a back upholstered in a striped fabric, and an elegant rear shelf that can be lifted for discretion...
It rests on four turned legs, joined by a crossbar, ensuring both stability and a light, airy appearance.

With its compact dimensions, ingenious interior layout, and the warmth of its mahogany, this piece exemplifies the refinement of small-scale furniture during the reign of Louis XVI.

The maker’s mark refers to Joseph Gengenbach, known as Canabas, a master cabinetmaker who received his certification in 1766 and was renowned for his functional and ingenious furniture.

A charming collector’s piece that can be presented as a love note or a small ladies’ mirror cabinet.
