" The Canal in Venice "
Oil on panel,
Signed lower left,
A beautiful work by the French painter Alfred Ferdinand Duprat depicting a canal in Venice with a gondola gliding along it.
The painting captures the poetry of the City of the Doges and its palaces perched on the water. The gondola in the foreground appears to glide across the water, while sailboats with colorful sails seem moored in the background.
The artist paints with fluid brushstrokes and masterful impasto, which give structure to the ochre-hued, light-drenched architecture of the palaces lining the canal. The power of this painting lies in its incredible play of light, where the warmth of the setting sun sets the facades ablaze and is subtly reflected on the water, beneath a sky dotted with hints of pink on the horizon.
After beginning his artistic journey by studying at the School of Fine Arts in Venice, his hometown, Alfred Ferdinand Duprat developed a style deeply influenced by French Impressionist painting and William Turner’s mastery of light, characterized by quick, short, and vibrant brushstrokes. Primarily recognized as a master of modern veduta and a true “painter of light,” the bulk of his artistic output revolves around his passion for Italy and water, ceaselessly immortalizing the Venetian lagoon, its gondolas, its canals, and the reflections of the sky at dawn or dusk on the Doge’s Palace.
Later in life, he lived in Paris, where he applied this same atmospheric sensibility to his paintings of the Seine and its bridges, capturing them in clear, luminous panoramas.
Today, his works are particularly sought after on the art market at auctions and are also featured in the collections of several French museums, notably in Aix-en-Provence, Brest, and Laval.
