FIFTEEN-LIGHT CHANDELIER IN GILDED BRONZE AND PAINTED PORCELAIN, LOUIS XVI STYLE, IN THE SPIRIT OF THE SÈVRES MANUFACTORY. FRANCE, LATE 19TH CENTURY

An important French fifteen-light chandelier in gilded bronze and painted porcelain, crafted in the Louis XVI style, constituting a remarkable example of French decorative arts from the historicist period. The composition is centered around a large porcelain basin in an intense turquoise blue, richly adorned with gilded motifs and hand-painted panels.

The main panel depicts a putto playing with a garland of grapes next to an antique cup filled with fruit. The porcelain baluster vase forming the upper shaft, as well as the suspended collar, are decorated with bouquets of flowers set within gilded cartouches. This polychrome decoration reflects the refinement characteristic of 19th-century French porcelain, inspired by the prestigious creations of the Royal Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory.

The finely chiseled and gilded bronze frame consists of fifteen elegantly curved light arms, arranged on two levels. The arms are adorned with volutes, acanthus leaves, palmettes, rosettes, and richly sculpted lampshades. The central shaft is supported by three winged female herms integrated into plant-motif consoles. The upper section is crowned by an openwork gilt-bronze gallery suspended by a chain.

Given the exceptional quality of its casting, engraving, and porcelain painting, this chandelier was intended for state rooms, private mansions, and aristocratic residences, where it served as a major decorative feature.

Signatures and marks: The painted decoration on the porcelain bears the signature “GL,” likely that of the porcelain painter who executed the design.

Dimensions: Diameter: 60 cm.

Condition: Good condition, consistent with the piece’s age. Previously professionally restored. Slight signs of age and wear. The gilding and painted decoration are well preserved. Chandelier is wired for electricity.
