Painted-panel Secretary Desk, Paul Sormani, France, Paris, Second Half Of The 19th Century

A museum-quality secretary desk crafted in Paul Sormani’s Parisian workshop, a remarkable example of French furniture from the second half of the 19th century, executed in the spirit of Historicism with a refined interpretation of the Louis XV style. The frame is made of solid wood, veneered with carefully selected rosewood, arranged in a precise geometric pattern that highlights the architectural clarity of the form.

The piece rests on tall, curved cabriole legs, richly adorned with gilded bronze. The elegant curves of the legs and their bases are accentuated by plant motifs, lending the piece a great sense of visual lightness and an elegant dynamism.

The central element is a large painted panel integrated into the drop-down panel, depicting ancient lovers running toward a fountain, surrounded by cherubs. The composition, executed in the academic tradition, is distinguished by the subtle modeling of the figures, a soft chiaroscuro, and a masterfully rendered sense of landscape depth. The panel is framed by an intricate gilded bronze frame, adorned with rocaille motifs, floral scrollwork, and corner mascarons depicting female heads.

Beneath the flap is a drawer decorated with undulating bronze foliage and elegant handles. The interior is laid out in a practical manner: the upper section is divided by a shelf, while the lower section comprises four small mahogany drawers, two of which are lockable. The writing surface is lined with green velvet, creating a refined contrast with the warmth of the wood and the gilding.

The upper part of the writing desk is topped by a wide shelf surrounded by a gilded bronze balustrade, accentuating the piece’s ceremonial character. The lock plate bears the master’s signature along with the address of his Parisian workshop.
