Large Vase With Bronze Base And Painted Decoration, “the Triumph Of Venus,” France.
A monumental vase combining gilded bronze and painted porcelain, constituting a remarkable example of French decorative art from the Second Empire and Historicism periods. The oval bowl with an emerald-green base is adorned with a central composition depicting the allegorical scene of the “Triumph of Venus,” executed in the spirit of 18th-century academic mythological painting. On the reverse is a refined floral bouquet, rendered with delicate naturalism and great chromatic subtlety.
The porcelain body is set within a finely chiseled gilded bronze architectural frame, featuring an openwork Rocaille-style decoration. The handles take the form of dynamic vegetal volutes embellished with mascarons and ornamental cartouches. The upper border forms an openwork gallery of stylized foliage and acanthus leaves. The pedestal, designed as a ceremonial base, rests on a baluster shaft and a four-part base richly adorned with reliefs and symmetrical volutes.
The artistic design combines elements of Neo-Rococo and Neo-Baroque, characteristic of Parisian bronze workshops in the second half of the 19th century. Due to its stylistic qualities and the finesse of its porcelain painting, the work can be linked to the traditions of the Sèvres manufactory, renowned for the production of ceremonial vases and mantelpiece ornaments intended for aristocratic residences.
