Cherub Waiting For An Appointment. Kpm Berlin. Circa 1870
A charming porcelain figurine depicting a cherub in the guise of a gallant young officer awaiting a rendezvous. The winged figure is dressed in a pale green coat accented with gold trim, a white shirt, and purple breeches. His tricorn hat and sword are placed next to a grass-covered tree stump, which also serves as a support for the figure.
In his raised right hand, the cherub holds a pocket watch and checks the time impatiently. His left hand rests expressively on his hip, while his gaze, directed toward the viewer, conveys a slight perplexity and comical irritation caused by his beloved’s tardiness. The white wings accented with gilding evoke the character’s mythological nature, while the officer’s uniform and the familiar gesture transform the traditional image of Cupid into a witty romantic scene.
The composition, conceived in the Neo-Rococo style, draws on the artistic language of 18th-century European porcelain figures, combining pastoral conventions, theatrical gestures, and subtle courtly humor. The figure stands out for the finesse of its modeling, the softness of its polychromy, and the delicate use of gilding.
Markings: On the base are the manufacturer’s hidden blue scepter mark and the painting department’s red, orb-shaped mark on the surface, accompanied by the letters “KPM.” Additional numerical marks and handwritten inscriptions are present. The blue scepter is the historic mark of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Berlin, while the red orb was applied to figures with polychrome decoration.
