Schäfer & Vater – “la Bagarre” – Porcelain Figurine Set, Circa 1900
A charming white-glazed porcelain group depicting a scene of a quarrel between two young boys, produced by the German manufacturer Schäfer & Vater in Rudolstadt, Thuringia, circa 1900–1920.
The particularly lively composition depicts two figures in the midst of a quarrel: one, standing, holds his opponent by the head while raising his fist, while the other, knocked to the ground, tries to defend himself. Beside them are a dog and a basket filled with fruit, reinforcing the scene’s picturesque and humorous character.
The group is set against a hollowed-out tree trunk serving as a receptacle. This type of model could be used as a spills vase or a fireplace match holder, designed to hold the thin sticks or twisted papers that were once used to carry the flame from the hearth.
The modeling is particularly expressive, with careful attention paid to the figures’ poses, facial features, clothing, and the numerous details of the basket and the plant motifs. The entire piece is covered with a beautiful white glaze that is slightly ivory-toned and glossy.
On the underside of the base, an incised mark featuring the crown and star of the Schäfer & Vater manufactory in Rudolstadt.
