Reclining court figurine made of Meissen porcelain, designed to hold salt and pepper. “Gentleman on a Bowl” (Kavalier an Schale) model created by Johann Joachim Kaendler around 1762, featuring a blue onion-pattern decoration. Marked with crossed blue swords and numbered 2872. Made as a pair with the “Lady on a Bowl” figurine, numbered 2875. Listed in the Meissen-Bergman catalog.
The onion pattern was invented by Meissen; its success was such that it was adopted by many manufacturers throughout Europe.
