Rare Théodore Haviland Limoges Coffee Set – Kiln-fired Blue And Sumptuous Gold Gilding
An exceptional Limoges porcelain coffee service from the Théodore Haviland manufactory, featuring sumptuous blue-and-gold decoration, made in the late 19th or early 20th century, around 1900.
This remarkable 27-piece set stands out for the extraordinary richness of its decoration, combining a deep kiln-blue with particularly abundant gilding, which completely covers the interior of the cups as well as a large portion of the exterior of the various pieces.
The floral decoration, executed with great finesse, consists of delicate garlands of flowers, foliage, and small branches rendered in raised gilding. These ornaments stand out elegantly against the intense blue of the porcelain and extend onto the gilded areas, creating subtle interplay between texture and light.
The generous use of gilding, the high quality of its execution, and the refinement of the floral compositions lend this set a particularly luxurious character, far removed from standard Limoges porcelain productions.
The pitcher, sugar bowl, and cream pitcher feature elegant, curved shapes, accentuated by handles, knobs, and rims that are entirely gilded.
Set contents:
12 coffee cups
12 saucers
1 lidded coffee pot
1 lidded sugar bowl
1 cream pitcher
For a total of 27 pieces.
Manufacturers and marks:
The cups bear the initials “TH” imprinted in the clay, corresponding to the Théodore Haviland factory, as well as the decorator’s red mark “Th. Lazeyras – Limoges.”
The saucers bear the GDA mark, corresponding to the Gérard, Dufraisseix, and Abbott factory in Limoges. They feature a design that perfectly matches that of the cups, with the same kiln-blue backgrounds, prominent gilding, and delicate floral compositions in relief.
Condition:
The twelve cups and their saucers are in good condition, with a few subtle signs of wear on the gilding.
A few imperfections are worth noting on the shaped pieces:
The spout of the coffee pot has an imperfection.
Part of the gilded decoration on the sugar bowl’s lid is damaged.
There is a tiny chip on the body of the sugar bowl.
Despite these flaws, the set retains a very beautiful appearance, with luminous gilding and a particularly spectacular decoration.
A rare and sumptuous Limoges porcelain coffee service, remarkable for the abundance of its gilding and the delicacy of its floral relief decorations, reflecting the refinement of prestigious productions at the turn of the 20th century.
