Boulle-style Writing Desk, France, 19th Century
An elegant Boulle-style cabinet desk, crafted in the tradition of 19th-century French historicism, combining black lacquer, brass marquetry, gilded bronze, and leather. The design stands out for the refined contrast between the deep black background and the ornamental panels, where engraved brass forms intricate arabesques against a red lacquered background.
The rectangular top is upholstered in deep red leather, framed by a hot-gilded frieze that emphasizes the piece’s prestigious character. The band is punctuated by scalloped cartouches adorned with foliage motifs, framed by gilded bronze mounts. The central section is accentuated by a sculptural mascaron set within a rocaille frame, serving as a decorative focal point.
The curved, Louis XV-inspired legs terminate in finely chiseled gilded bronze feet. The sides are embellished with figurative gilded bronze mounts of exceptional quality in both casting and chiseling, attesting to the craftsmanship of the Parisian workshops.
This desk embodies the aesthetics of the Boulle style, inherited from André-Charles Boulle and reinterpreted in the 19th century, particularly during the Second Empire. Intended for a ceremonial study, it combined functionality with a display of social prestige.
