19th-century Clock, “allegory Of The Fine Arts” – Gilded Bronze And Marble
Mantel clock dating from the Napoleon III period (Second Empire, circa 1860–1880). This exceptional decorative timepiece stands out for its refined combination of fire-gilded bronze (ormolu), bronze sculptures with a brown patina, and elegant marble elements.
The central movement is framed by two magnificent, finely detailed reclining female figures in patinated bronze, representing allegories of the Fine Arts, Poetry, or the Sciences. The figure on the left holds a compass, while the one on the right carries a cup. The piece exudes remarkable classical elegance and refinement, reflecting the richness of French decorative arts in the second half of the 19th century.
The richly ornamented case features neoclassical and Neo-Renaissance motifs. At the top sits an elegant vase adorned with floral motifs. The white enamel dial features Roman numerals and slender openwork hands in the Breguet style. The front and base are embellished with finely chiseled bronze appliqués depicting acanthus leaves, arabesques, and decorative scrollwork, harmoniously combined with marble panels. The entire piece rests on a multi-tiered marble base, supported by remarkable, finely crafted bronze legs.
This clock is equipped with a French mechanical pendulum movement. It is an impressive decorative piece, combining sculptural expression, the nobility of its materials, and classical elegance.
