"ula Tavatava" Throwing Club — Fiji Islands, Oceania, Polynesia
A 19th-century throwing club of the Ula Tavatava type, featuring a deeply fluted or ribbed head. This is the most iconic style. These weapons were designed both for hand-to-hand combat and to be thrown with precision at an opponent during battles or rituals. The grooves increased the force of impact by concentrating the force along the ridges.
The intricate carvings on the lower part of the handle prevented the weapon from slipping out of the warrior’s wet or bloodied hands at the moment of the throw.
Wood with a beautiful, lustrous patina; hardwood, 40 cm in length, which is the average size for these weapons.
