Plaster Head Of A Holy Woman – Late 19th-century Gothic Cast – The Entombment Of Tonnerre

An important and remarkable plaster head of a Holy Woman, an antique cast from the late 19th century, based on a figure from the famous sculptural group of the Entombment of Christ at Tonnerre, a masterpiece of mid-15th-century Burgundian Gothic sculpture.

Created around 1453–1454 and attributed to the sculptors Jean Michel and Georges de la Sonnette, the Entombment of Tonnerre is one of the most remarkable ensembles of Burgundian sculpture from the late Middle Ages, in the artistic tradition of Claus Sluter.

This female head, traditionally identified as a Holy Woman or mourner, features a delicately modeled face, slightly tilted, with lowered eyelids and an expression marked by contemplation and deep melancholy.

It is distinguished by its extraordinary hairstyle, characteristic of 15th-century Burgundian fashion, consisting of braids framing the face and an imposing headdress with skillfully arranged folds, extended by two wide panels of fabric falling on either side.

The contrast between the soft contours of the face, the delicacy of the features, and the monumental drapery lends this sculpture a particularly expressive presence.

Created in the late 19th century, this cast is part of the great tradition of plaster reproductions of ancient sculptures, produced primarily for museums, fine arts schools, and study collections.

Its substantial size, the precision of its execution, and the quality of its model make it a fine example of these antique art casts, which are now sought after as much for their historical significance as for their decorative qualities.
