Chest Of Drawers With A Stepped Front And Marquetry – Louis XVI Period, 18th Century

A jump-front chest of drawers with a central projection, featuring wood veneer marquetry; a French piece from the Louis XVI period, circa 1775–1790.

Rectangular in shape, the front features two large drawers arranged in two rows. Each drawer is accented by marquetry decoration simulating three compartments, giving the front a particularly architectural arrangement.

The decoration combines rosewood panels arranged in a herringbone pattern with darker frames, likely made of amaranth or rosewood. The whole is accented by light-colored fillets and green-stained fillets forming Greek-style geometric motifs. Delicate alternating friezes complete this composition, which is highly characteristic of late 18th-century neoclassical taste.

The sides are also entirely inlaid. They feature large geometric panels centered with herringbone motifs, framed by fillets with recessed corners. The front legs, adorned with faux fluting in marquetry, extend into tall, tapered tubular legs ending in small bronze feet.

The lower central crossbar, cut into a slight apron, is adorned with a gilded bronze piece depicting a neoclassical urn surrounded by foliage scrolls.

The chest of drawers is topped by a thick slab of gray marble veined with white, molded around its perimeter and following the projection of the front panel.

The drawers retain their circular, downward-sloping handles set on rosettes, their keyholes, and their original locks. The interior construction, the dovetail joints, the drawer bottoms, and the back frame are consistent with the techniques used in the late 18th century.
The narrow width of this piece, 94.5 cm, classifies it among “entre-deux” chests of drawers—models sought after for their space-saving proportions and ease of placement.

In very good condition. Restorations and repairs from earlier periods, minor imperfections and wear consistent with the piece’s age. No maker’s mark.
