Jupiter And Europa, An 18th-century Engraving Based On A Work By Giulo Romano, Engraved By Andréa Scacciati, 1766
An elegant antique engraving based on a composition by Giulio Romano (1499–1546), one of Raphael’s most brilliant pupils and a leading figure of Italian Mannerism. This print, finely executed by the Florentine engraver Andrea Scacciati (1725–1771), captures with finesse and sensitivity a mythological scene populated by deities, winged cupids, and river allegories.
The composition, rich in decorative detail, features a male figure with the head of a bull—a symbol of river deities in ancient mythology—surrounded by putti and female figures in an idealized landscape. The drawing, characteristic of 16th-century Mannerist taste, is rendered here with remarkable delicacy of line, revealing the engraver’s technical mastery.
The lower margin reads:
- “Giulio Romano inv. del.” on the left,
- “Andrea Scacciati incid.” on the right.
Printed on laid paper, this engraving features beautiful warm tones and excellent print quality. It is showcased in an elegant 19th-century wooden and gilded stucco frame, richly adorned with Louis XVI-inspired plant friezes and scrollwork.
A refined work combining the inventive genius of the Italian Renaissance with the art of 18th-century printmaking, ideal for a collector’s cabinet, a library, or a high-quality classical interior.
