Empire-period Swan-adorned Side Table In Flamed Mahogany And Turquoise Marble, 19th Century

A significant circular pedestal table from the Empire period, crafted from solid mahogany and mahogany veneer, topped with a turquin blue marble tabletop.

The circular top, with a slight raised rim, features a beautiful bluish-gray grain interspersed with lighter shades. It rests on a wide mahogany-veneered band, whose natural scrollwork elegantly enlivens the surface.

The particularly decorative base consists of three swans entirely carved from solid mahogany. Their outstretched wings are meticulously rendered, with each row of feathers finely detailed. The long, arched necks and delicately sculpted heads attest to the high quality of the carving.

These three swans are arranged around a sturdy, pyramid-shaped central support, veneered with flamed mahogany. The piece rests on a tripod base with curved sides, ending in carved feet shaped like lion’s paws.

The swan, an emblematic motif of the Neoclassical ornamental vocabulary, was particularly popular during the Consulate and the Empire. It frequently appears in prestigious early 19th-century furniture, associated with notions of elegance, power, and majesty.

This pedestal table stands out for the quality of its mahogany, the scale of its carved base, and the balance of its composition. The warm, deep hue of the wood contrasts harmoniously with the cool tones of the turquoise blue marble.
