Stamped "louis Noël Malle," Louis XVI-era Half-moon Console Table In Carved Wood, 18th Century
An elegant half-moon console table from the Louis XVI period, made of carved, molded wood, lacquered in rechampi gray and partially gilded, topped with a beautiful veined gray marble top—probably Sainte-Anne gray—with a corbin-shaped edge.
The curved apron features rich neoclassical decoration consisting of interlaced friezes, rosettes, fleurons, and foliage motifs, set within molded panels accented with gilding. The side panels are adorned with carved panels of stylized flowers, while the lower section is embellished with finely carved, cascading laurel garlands punctuated by small gilded berries.
It rests on four tapered, fluted, and serrated legs, topped with leaf-shaped finials. The ornate crossbar, also carved and gilded, features a covered cassolette decorated with godrons at its center, surmounted by a pine cone—a highly characteristic element of the Louis XVI decorative style.
The stamp N MAILLE is visible on the front leg. Louis-Noël Malle (1733–1782), who was admitted as a master craftsman in Paris during the 18th century, was a cabinetmaker renowned for his Louis XVI-style pieces, particularly chairs and carved wooden works.
The mark is indeed MAILLE, but according to the book *Les ébénistes du XVIII ème siècle* by Count François de Salverte, published in 1923, it is a transcription of the name MALLE.
We also have the Jurande JME hallmark, so this piece of furniture comes from the master cabinetmaker’s workshop.
Beautiful overall balance, rich and highly decorative design, in the Parisian style of the second half of the 18th century.
Please note: wear to the gilding and lacquer, small losses, chips, and visible old repairs, particularly on the garlands and certain carved elements. Original structure, with signs of wear consistent with its age. The marble has a beautiful patina and appears to be antique.
A very beautiful decorative piece from the 18th century, both elegant and architecturally designed, featuring a particularly comprehensive neoclassical decoration: interlacing motifs, rosettes, laurel garlands, fluted legs, and a central cassolette. A high-quality console table, attributable to Parisian craftsmanship from the late reign of Louis XVI, made all the more interesting by its L. N. MALLE mark.
Late 18th century.
