Madonna After Donatello In Embossed Copper, Point Tapestry, Late 19th Century.
- Pushed copper plate representing a Madonna and the child Jesus after Donatello. The virgin is represented with her hands clasped in prayer to the child Jesus who is seated in front of her, in profile. Two cherubs are arranged on either side so as to inhabit the space in the background.
- This work, in embossed copper, takes up the codes of the sculptural technique which makes it possible to create on a flat surface a very thin relief obeying the codes of perspective representation. As in the manner of Donatello's flattened reliefs (stiacciato), the impression of depth is given by a way of gradually sculpting the successive planes.
- This relief is presented in a wooden frame whose interior moldings are covered in velvet. On this frame, there is a cartouche on which is written "DONATELLO FLORENCE MCCCLII". The whole thing is framed by a large petit point tapestry border; on a red background, the fleur-de-lis motifs arranged in a frieze stand out (each motif: a stylized golden fleur-de-lis around which 5 naturally treated fleur-de-lis develop). The fleur-de-lis follows the curved shape of the braid's notches.
- This work surprises as much as it seduces with the eclecticism of the techniques used (embossed copper, wood, finished tapestry) to highlight the Madonna.
- Copper dimensions: width: 32 cm, Height: 39 cm Frame dimensions: width: 86.5cm, Height: 93.5cm - Good condition
