Hourglass. Europe, Late 19th Century

An impressive, large-scale hourglass dating from the late 19th century—a remarkable piece of decorative art that serves as a particularly expressive piece of furniture, characteristic of libraries, studies, and reception rooms of the historicist era. It consists of two large blown-glass bulbs filled with fine sand, joined by three turned wooden uprights and three brass and bronze rods adorned with baluster-style elements. The harmonious proportions and the elegant combination of glass, wood, and metal lend the piece a remarkable architectural presence. Hourglasses of this scale were used not only to measure time but also embodied the ideas of contemplation, knowledge, and reflection on the passage of time. Today, such pieces are particularly sought after as decorative objects for classical interiors, private libraries, collectors’ cabinets, and historic residences.
