Decorative Knight's Armor Made Of Wrought Iron. Germany, Late 19th–early 20th Century

An impressive decorative knight's suit of armor made in Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries from wrought iron, perfectly illustrating the traditions of European Historicism. This set faithfully reproduces a complete set of plate armor from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, notable for the quality of its metalwork and the attention to historical detail. The armor is displayed on an internal wooden frame resting on a pedestal, emphasizing its role as a ceremonial piece intended for castles, aristocratic residences, hunting lodges, and grand reception halls.

The helmet features a flip-up visor, an articulated neck guard, and a chin strap. The cuirass is complemented by articulated vambraces, a bladed breastplate, imposing shoulder guards, forearm guards, and articulated gauntlets. The set is completed by the greaves, knee guards, and shinsguards, constituting a full knight’s suit of armor.

The iron surfaces are richly engraved with acanthus scrolls, heads of fantastical dragons, horsemen, and stylized heraldic motifs. This decoration is characteristic of decorative armor produced during the Historicist period, inspired by the prestigious 16th-century German armor and the famous armor-making centers of southern Germany.

In the second half of the 19th century, decorative armor became an indispensable feature of aristocratic residences and major private collections, adorning libraries, hunting rooms, vestibules, and state rooms. With its monumental silhouette, the quality of its forging, and the richness of its engraved decoration, this set is a remarkable example of German decorative arts from the Historicist period.
