Large Neoclassical Center Desk Made Of Elm Burl, Emilia, Late 18th–early 19th Century
A large center desk, a fine example of Emilian cabinetmaking, dating from the late 18th to the early 19th century.
The piece features an elegant neoclassical design, still strongly influenced by the Louis XVI style, recognizable in its harmonious proportions, slender, tapered legs, and the richness of its geometric veneer patterns.
Of particular interest is the use of elm burl, with its vivid and dynamic grain, skillfully paired with other types of wood. Geometric bands, color contrasts, and subtle fillets embellish the fronts, sides, and structural elements, attesting to exceptionally meticulous cabinetmaking.
The desk features a large rectangular top with slightly rounded corners, upholstered in green leather with gold-embossed decorations.
The front features five drawers—four arranged on the sides and one in the center—beneath which is a practical pull-out shelf, also upholstered in green leather.
Particularly noteworthy is the center panel: the back is entirely paneled and features a series of faux drawers that mirror the front’s composition, allowing the desk to be placed freely in the center of a room so its craftsmanship can be appreciated from every angle.
The structure rests on four slender, tapered legs, decorated with fine fillets, in the neoclassical style derived from the Louis XVI period.
The desk has undergone a meticulous conservative restoration, respecting the piece’s original characteristics. The interiors of the drawers have been refinished and lined in white.
It was decided to preserve the green leather upholstery on the tabletop and the pull-out shelf, despite signs of wear, including stains, scuffs, and even deep scratches. However, the leather retains high-quality decorative craftsmanship and contributes to the piece’s historical character.
Given its size and the richness of its craftsmanship, this desk is particularly well-suited for furnishing a professional study, a library, a representative office, or a private residence. The clean lines of its design also allow it to blend interestingly into contemporary settings.
The piece has been restored, is structurally sound, and is ready to be placed in a new setting.
