Blown Glass Dog-shaped Vessel – Murano (?), 19th Century
Unusual zoomorphic blown glass vessel in the shape of a small dog, probably made in Murano for export to the Austro-German market (Bavaria, Austria). Dating to the mid / second half of the 19th century.
The body shows vertical ribbing, with four applied legs, a stylised head with pointed ears, and a tail-shaped spout, designed for pouring spirits or schnapps. In German-speaking countries, this type of piece is referred to as “Schnapshund” or “Spaßhund” (“schnapps dog” or “joke dog”), appreciated as a table curiosity and conversation piece.
