COMING HOME FROM SCHOOL
Oil on panel, signed lower right
53.5 × 44.5 cm unframed
65 × 55.5 cm framed
Three brothers are walking home from school, huddled close together, as the city stretches out before them.
Seen from behind, they walk down the street, still very much children. Their silhouettes depict a familiar scene: the walk home, their footsteps in unison, the silent bond between three brothers.
Concha María Gutiérrez Navas captures this moment with delicacy. The silhouettes, the facades, and the street blend into a fluid composition, animated by shades of gray, beige, and deeper tones. The light still seems fresh, almost misty. Nothing is emphasized : the emotion arises from this simple scene and from the tenderness that unites the three children. This work is moving for its nostalgic atmosphere and great sensitivity. It evokes not so much a specific place as a childhood memory that everyone can recognize.
Concha María Gutiérrez Navas
Born in Madrid in 1926, Concha María Gutiérrez Navas is the daughter of the painter Manuel Gutiérrez Navas. She grew up in her father’s studio, then took over and ran the family studio in Madrid. A painter and educator, she taught for several decades and trained more than five hundred students. Upon her death in 1998, *El País* paid tribute to her as a “teacher of painters” and highlighted the breadth of her exhibition activity in Spain and abroad. She participated in the 21st Madrid Autumn Salon in 1947, a fact confirmed by the exhibition catalog held by the Friends of the Reina Sofía Museum Foundation. The biographical entries consulted also mention a first medal in the landscape section in 1952, as well as exhibitions in Madrid, Seville, Valladolid, and Paris. Her work, primarily figurative, is distinguished by a nuanced palette, subdued light, and a supple brushstroke. In this panel, an everyday scene becomes an image of memory: three brothers walking together, leaving the viewer free to find their own memories within it.
