Year 1854 / Return From Fishing On The Shore / Watercolor

Very attractive watercolor dated 1854 depicting a fishing boat aground on the shore, animated by several characters busy with shore work.
The work possesses all the charm of the great coastal scenes of the 19th century:a damp, misty atmosphere, a soft light typical of the coasts of northern Europe, as well as a genuine poetry of everyday maritime life.

The eye is immediately drawn to the imposing sailboat with its ochre sails and slender masts that dominates the composition. The painter has rendered the details of the hull, rigging and fishing nets abandoned on the sand with great finesse. The small characters scattered around the boat bring the scene to life and reinforce the impression of authenticity: sailors, fishermen and inhabitants seem to evolve in a still preserved world, before the massive industrialization of ports.

.

The composition is particularly successful. The boat forms a powerful central mass, while the cliff and small house perched on the right bring depth and balance to the whole. The light mist in the background creates an almost romantic atmosphere, evoking the great English and Dutch schools of 19th-century marine painting.
The artist masters watercolor perfectly: delicate transparencies, subtle bluish grays, luminous touches in the characters' clothing and great fluidity in the treatment of sky and water.

signature faintly legible lower right and dated 1854.
