Summer Night On The Rhine, Copy After Christian Eduard Boettcher
Josef Burger (1887–1966), copy after Christian Eduard Boettcher
“Summer Night on the Rhine” / Outdoor Social Scene
Probably an oleograph on canvas, after an original work by Christian Eduard Boettcher / Böttcher (1818–1889)
This large-format work depicts a nighttime social scene with a particularly evocative atmosphere. It is based on the motif of Christian Eduard Boettcher’s famous painting “Summer Night on the Rhine.” The original, painted in 1862, is one of the representative works of Rhenish Romanticism and the Düsseldorf School of Painting. It is housed in a public museum collection in Cologne.
The work presented here is not an independent original composition, but a historical copy, or reproduction, based on Boettcher’s original. It is attributed to Josef Burger (1887–1966), a Munich artist best known for his landscapes and still lifes, and a student of Leo Putz. Based on current analysis, this is likely not a traditional oil painting executed entirely by hand, but rather a work created using the oleography process on canvas.
The motif depicts a festive evening or nighttime scene outdoors: under a majestic tree, a group of people has gathered; guests are seated at set tables, conversing and enjoying the nighttime atmosphere. In the background, a view opens up onto a Rhine-inspired landscape featuring a village, a church, and a moonlit sky. The composition captivates with its rich array of figures, the warmth of its lighting, and the romantic depth of the landscape.
Thanks to its large format and distinctive atmosphere, the work has a strong decorative presence. It is particularly well-suited to classic, stately, or historically inspired interiors, and creates a very elegant effect with its dark, glossy frame.
The painting has been professionally cleaned, allowing the colors, contrasts, and depth to regain greater clarity. The stretcher has also been replaced, so the work is structurally stabilized and ready to hang.
