Sorrento Marquetry Table, Mid-19th Century – Rich Marquetry
A small, richly inlaid table from the Sorrento region of Italy. The town of Sorrento was already renowned by the mid-19th century for its exceptional inlay and marquetry work, which was collected and exported throughout Europe. Local workshops mastered the art of assembling a wide variety of precious woods—including walnut, maple, mahogany, and other fine-grained fruitwoods and hardwoods—into intricate geometric and ornamental patterns. The round tabletop of this piece features a star and lozenge motif of exceptional quality and perfect symmetry, framed by several rings of decorative inlay. The precision of the inlay work, the harmony of the wood tones, and the exceptional depth of the design are typical characteristics of Sorrento's renowned craftsmanship. The tabletop rests on a turned baluster base with three elegantly curved legs. A particularly ingenious detail: the small drawer is discreetly integrated into the frame, thus providing the table with additional functionality. The table has been professionally cleaned and hand-polished with shellac, which brings out the natural depth and warmth of the wood. Overall, the piece is in very good condition and has been meticulously cared for. Special features: Originally from Sorrento, mid-19th century. Exceptionally rich inlays.
