Holly-shaped Ceiling Light, Brass, France (nancy), Circa 1920

Three-light brass ceiling light shaped like a holly branch. A horizontal ring of curved branches adorned with serrated holly leaves and red glass berries extends from a twisted brass stem.

The leaves and branches are painted green; the stem, sleeves, and ceiling rose remain in bare brass. The red glass berries are arranged individually and in clusters among the leaves and diffuse the light from the bulbs. The ceiling rosette features a miniature version of the leaf and berry motif.

The three light sources are directed downward and arranged among the branches. The original B22 sockets have been preserved. The lamp has been rewired; the paint has been cleaned and restored.

About the Motif

Holly is a traditional winter symbol. Its evergreen foliage and red berries represent steadfastness and hope during the cold season. In the United States, holly (primarily American holly) is one of the most popular Christmas symbols; Holly Day is celebrated there on December 19.
