Georges (geo) De Vlamynck "abstract Female Nude E" Painting / Mixed Media, Charcoal

Artist: Georges (géo) De Vlamynck

GEORGES (Géo) DE VLAMYNCK “Abstract Female Nude E”—painting / mixed media, charcoal, ink, and chalk on wet paper, mid-20th century.

Here, the artist depicts a nude female figure in a minimalist style; just a few strokes suffice to capture the moment, in pursuit of abstraction—reminiscent of certain nude drawings by Henri Matisse from the same period...

In perfect condition.

Overall dimensions, including frame and mat: 78 cm x 71.5 cm.

Provenance:

Studio of the artist Lola Di Vito, mezzo-soprano singer, painter, and sculptor. She was a student (and most certainly a muse, depicted in this drawing) of Géo De Vlamynck.

Biography:

Géo De Vlamynck, born in 1897 in Bruges and died in 1980 in Koekelberg (Brussels), was a painter, fresco artist, stained-glass designer, interior designer, and teacher. His students included Nicolas de Staël, Maurice Wyckaert, and Roger Somville.

In 1909, Georges De Vlamynck enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bruges, where he was noticed by Flori Van Acker (1858–1940), a painter and director of the Academy.

During World War I, he took drawing classes at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He received first prize with distinction in drawing and perspective.

In 1921, he won first prize in monumental composition for “Repentance After the Fall.” In 1922, he won first prize with the highest distinction for “The Renewal of the Centuries.”

In 1927, he continued his training at the La Cambre Institute of Architecture and Decorative Arts, founded by Henry Van de Velde. He took classes in decorative and monumental painting supervised by Gustave Van de Woestijne and attended theater classes taught by Herman Teirlinck (a Belgian playwright), for whom he created several stage sets and play posters.

In 1929, he graduated from La Cambre with a degree in painting, receiving honors.

In 1930, he participated in the World’s Fairs in Liège and Antwerp.

In 1962, he created a stained-glass window for the Chapel of the Virgin in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Koekelberg.
