Patrick Villas for Royal Boch — Panther Sculpture
Bust of a feline in white glazed ceramic, created by Royal Boch in the early 2000s. This piece, although unsigned, is in perfect condition and comes in its original box marked “Royal Boch” (see photo). Inspired by the work of Rembrandt Bugatti, the sculpture recalls the lines and textures of Art Deco white crackle ceramics.
About the Artist
Patrick Villas, trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, began his career as a painter before turning to sculpture — a discipline he mastered on his own. His deep connection with animals, particularly big cats, was forged through years of observation at the Antwerp Zoo. His sculptures capture the latent energy, the nobility of movement, and the intensity of gaze found in his subjects.
Since 2010, Villas has been based in France and exhibits internationally. His style strikes a balance between anatomical precision and expressive abstraction. While his sculptures originate from careful bone studies, their surfaces break down into fractured planes — as though the material itself were resisting taming.
He has collaborated twice with the Belgian ceramics manufacturer Royal Boch for animal-themed series, and with Daum in France, which produced two crystal editions: a panther head (2018) and a lion head (2021). His work pays tribute to great animal sculptors like Antoine-Louis Barye and Rembrandt Bugatti, while introducing a raw, tense aesthetic all his own. Villas' art does not seek to charm — it confronts, observes, penetrates.
