A major Franco-Polish painter and illustrator of the postwar Surrealist movement, he is known for his landscapes and still lifes with Surrealist touches created in the mid-20th century

Born in Warsaw, Poland, he grew up in Austria, where he developed a precocious talent for drawing at a very young age and briefly trained in architectural design.
Entirely self-taught in his painting practice, his career truly took off in 1946 during a highly successful exhibition in London. In 1948, he received the prestigious “Young Artist” award in France

Quickly gaining support from critics and prominent figures in the arts and entertainment world, his works began to be exhibited internationally. He went on to exhibit in Bern, Paris, Cannes, and New York.

His work is characterized by dreamlike landscapes and fantastical compositions heavily influenced by Surrealism. By combining a meticulous technique with a very smooth finish and a poetic imagination, he enjoyed infusing his work with irony and humor.

In the early 1960s, he produced his famous series of mineral still lifes and “gemstone flowers” (or Gemstone Flowers). These works consistently feature blue or translucent floral arrangements emerging from desert soils or cracked rock formations
