Sugar Bowl And Lid - Paris - Nast Manufactory - 18th Century
Artist: Manufacture De Nast
Oval in shape, with straight, slightly curved sides, resting on a slight foot. It features two ring-shaped handles on the sides, attached to the body. The lid, slightly domed and flared, is topped with a seed-shaped knob.
HARD porcelain.
With a white base dotted with small gold stars, the body is decorated on both sides with polychrome animal scenes set in wooded landscapes. The first depicts a shepherd wearing a red jacket and a black hat, surrounded by several animals, including a cow, a deer, and a dog lying in the foreground. The second depicts a bear facing a feline, positioned on either side of a tree.
The lid is also adorned with small animal scenes set within miniature rural landscapes.
Gold lines highlight the various borders.
Mark(s): NONE. However, as shown in the photographs, I own a saucer from the same set, bearing the mark “NAST à PARIS” on the reverse, applied in red using a stencil. This comparative piece allows us to attribute this sugar bowl with certainty to the Nast manufactory.
A certificate of authenticity accompanied by comparative photographs will be provided to the buyer at the time of sale.
Dimensions: Height 14.8 cm - Length: 12.5 cm,
Condition: PERFECT CONDITION,
Period: 18th century – LOUIS XVI,
The choice of the bear as a decorative subject is worth noting. While animal depictions are common in 18th-century decorative arts, the bear remains a much rarer subject, particularly on French porcelain, where birds, dogs, horses, and game animals predominate. Its presence on this piece, combined with that of a tiger, gives the design a particularly unusual character and reflects a taste for depictions of wild and exotic animals.
