Japan, Octagonal Ceramic Vase By Hissan Tōen, Shigaraki, Blue, Gold, And Silver, Circa 1950
This flower vase, designed for the tea room, stands out for its octagonal shape and its nuanced Persian blue. Variations in the glaze’s thickness and transparency allow the material to show through at the edges. Irregular patches of gold and silver leaf catch the light and highlight the facets.
The piece is attributed to the third generation of 菱三陶園 (Hissan Tōen), a Shigaraki pottery studio, circa 1950. During this period, Ogawa Sanji, the third-generation master, developed ceramics for the tea ceremony, drawing inspiration in particular from ceramics of the Momoyama period.
Japan, Shigaraki, circa 1950. With its original tomobako.
