Persian Lacquer On English Ceramic. Qajar-victoria Period, 19th Century.
Artist: Qajar Kadjar
This dish is quite exceptional, it is an English ceramic from Stoke on Trent which bears a lacquered palace scene decoration in Persia at the end of the 19th century. We do not know of any other example of Qajar lacquer on European ceramic, the materials being poorly compatible, indeed the lacquer cannot adhere properly to a ceramic surface lacking porosity. It is miraculous that 150 years after its creation the lacquer is still present and in relatively good condition. This was a special order from an original amateur. The quality of the decoration is of the best quality, it was lacquered by an excellent artist. We did not find a signature. Rare object. Ceramic in good condition, on the back of the dish printed mark in green of the Johnson brothers and three traces of firing pernettes. Some small flaking lacquer losses. No repairs.
