"capercaillie" Ceramic Vase. Eduard Stellmacher (1868–1945) Austria-hungary.
A monumental ceramic vase in the style of a planter, created in 1905 by Eduard Stellmacher (1868–1945), a prominent artist and sculptor at the Amphora factory. This work is a remarkable example of Austrian Art Nouveau in the spirit of the Vienna Secession, harmoniously combining symbolism, sculptural naturalism, and the major innovations in art ceramics of the early 20th century.
The rounded body is adorned with a spectacular high relief depicting a capercaillie among conifer branches laden with pinecones. The modeling reveals exceptional sculptural mastery and a deep understanding of natural forms. The surface is coated with a refined polychrome glaze in shades of green, brown, and golden ocher, enhanced by luminous golden accents that reinforce the decorative richness of the piece. This perfect synthesis of sculpture and experimental ceramic art is one of the defining characteristics of Eduard Stellmacher’s finest creations during the golden age of the Amphora manufactory.
With its monumental dimensions, rarity, and exceptional artistic quality, this work stands as a remarkable testament to early 20th-century Austrian decorative arts.
