Mossi Antilope Head-helmet Mask From Burkina Faso
Wan-balinga mask, a Mossi helmet depicting an antelope with a human face that evokes a mythical Mossi figure—the mother of the first Mossi chief. The earth-based colors are typical of older pieces; these masks were worn on top of the head, with a thick layer of fiber attached to hold the mask in place and conceal the dancer.
These masks are generally worn during the funerals of an elder—whether male or female—and accompany the body to the grave.
Shows signs of wear; it dates from the early 20th century and has been used in dance; approximately 31/17 cm; has stains and signs of wear.
