Manchu Silk Shoes – China, Qing Dynasty
A delicate example of traditional Chinese women’s footwear, these Manchu shoes date back to the late Qing Dynasty, at the end of the 19th century.
Made of embroidered silk, with leather linings and soles, they attest to the refinement of traditional clothing and the skill of the textile craftsmen of the time.
Manchu shoes are distinguished by their characteristic shapes and the use of decorative fabrics, often embellished with elaborate embroidery. Intended for women’s wear, they represent an interesting testament to the material culture of imperial China and the dress customs of Manchu communities.
This pair still retains remnants of the red pompons that were originally attached, details that contribute to the object’s historical charm.
Condition: generally good, considering its age. Traces of the red pompons remain; the stitching where they were attached is torn on the left shoe.
