Puskola Poth – Ancient Manuscript On Palm Leaves, Sri Lanka

A small and fascinating artifact of the Sinhalese writing tradition, this Puskola Poth belongs to the category of manuscripts created on palm leaves, an ancient form of knowledge transmission widespread in Sri Lanka and other regions of South Asia.

Known locally as ola-bladmanuscripts, these manuscripts were created by preparing and smoothing thin palm leaves, onto which the text was incised with a metal stylus. The incisions could then be darkened to make the writing more legible.

The tradition of palm-leaf manuscripts is closely linked to the literary and religious culture of Sri Lanka, where these media were used to preserve Buddhist texts, literary works, and traditional knowledge.
