Gigas Entada
An impressive pod of Entada gigas, one of the largest legumes in the world and one of the most fascinating plants in tropical flora.
The pod of this species can reach astonishing sizes: it is woody, extremely durable, and composed of numerous segments, each containing a large seed. When ripe, it can break apart into individual pieces and disperse in the water.
And this is precisely where this plant’s journey begins: its seeds are capable of floating for long periods in saltwater.
Carried by ocean currents, they can travel great distances before reaching a new coastline and, under favorable conditions, germinate. This is why the seeds of Entada gigas are known in various traditions as “sea heart.”
The plant is native to the tropical regions of the Americas and grows as a giant vine, climbing up the surrounding vegetation. Even the genus name reflects the distinctive shape of its fruits. The seeds, large and hard, have a smooth surface and a distinctive rounded shape, almost as if they were small man-made objects.
