Set Of 4 Antique Mokugyo, Japan
A striking set of four Japanese mokugyo carved from wood, dating from 1900–1939; these are traditional percussion instruments used in Buddhist practice to provide rhythmic accompaniment for the recitation of sutras and religious ceremonies.
The four pieces feature a characteristic rounded, hollow shape, with carved decorative elements and traces of their original refined polychrome finish. The surface retains traces of black and red lacquer, gilded details, and a patina developed over time, which lend the set a unique charm.
The mokugyo, whose Japanese name literally means “wooden fish,” belongs to the tradition of East Asian ritual instruments.
Its internal cavity produces a characteristic resonance when struck, while the regular rhythm punctuates liturgical recitation.
The set stands out for its four pieces of graduated sizes, a particularly interesting configuration for collecting and display. The scuffs on the lacquer, surface abrasions, and more noticeable wear on the lower sections bear witness to the objects’ long history and accentuate their authentic, well-worn character.
