Vintage Botanical Teaching Model Paravia – Segale Cornuta
Rare vintage botanical educational model produced by Paravia, depicting ergot (Claviceps purpurea), the parasitic fungus of rye responsible for the historical phenomenon known as "ergotism."
Made for school use, this model is part of the tradition of three-dimensional educational aids between the late 19th and 20th centuries, essential tools for teaching botany and plant pathology before the advent of digital technology.
Ergot played a crucial role in European history: accidental ingestion of contaminated flour caused ergotism, also known as "shingles," a condition that caused convulsions, hallucinations, and necrosis. Claviceps purpurea is also the source of alkaloids later used in medicine and pharmaceuticals.
Condition: Good overall condition. It shows consistent signs of age: half of the original descriptive index is missing, there are small color detachments, and one element has been separated to facilitate transportation and avoid damage. The piece can be easily reassembled at home upon receipt.
