Museum - 1950s Portable Weather Station Case -

Portable weather station case, used between 1950 and 1975, manufactured by PRECIS MECANIQUE for Météo France, multiple measurements; the case measures 60 x 40 x 17, weighs 4.5 kg
Description

The portable weather station consists of a lightweight metal case, fitted with fixed wooden holders containing printed materials, meteorological instruments, and their accessories. The case contains the instruments needed to measure the following basic meteorological parameters : temperature (a maximum thermometer, a minimum thermometer), pressure (an aneroid barometer), precipitation (a compact rain gauge with a graduated measuring cylinder), wind (a simple with a detachable mast and guy wires for direction and a handheld electromagnetic anemometer for speed) and humidity (a rattling psychrometer with a dry-bulb thermometer and a "wet-bulb" thermometer). The case also includes a compass for orienting the wind vane and a bottle of distilled water. Portable weather stations or “suitcase stations” were used until 1985 to conduct measurement campaigns. This portable weather station was manufactured in 1955, aswere most of the instruments it contains. See the description andoperation of each instrument.

Usage

The portable weather station contains all the instruments necessary to measure basic meteorological parameters at remote sites. At a weather station, it serves as a backup in case of failure of the standard instruments.

Documentation associated with the object

User manual for the W-241-A and W-241-B portable weather stations (November 1956) and others, as shown in the provided photos.
Signs of wear. All measuring instruments appear to be in working order; only the handheld electromagnetic anemometer is missing. The number of these cases in circulation is likely quite limited; the example presented here can be considered quite exceptional.
