Green Smithsonite Sphere On A Custom Base

Smithsonite (named in honor of James Smithson, the mineralogist who bequeathed his fortune to found the Smithsonian Institution), is a secondary mineral belonging to the carbonate group; it forms as a result of the weathering and oxidation of primary zinc deposits.
Smithsonite typically occurs in a variety of colors, including green, blue, pink, yellow, and brown. The green color, as seen in the veins of this specimen, is attributed to the presence of trace amounts of copper; the resulting composition resembles a tiny, miniature alien planet.
