Large Russian Icon (62.5 × 53.5 Cm) Depicting The Resurrection, 19th Century
An exceptional and imposing 19th-century Russian icon depicting, at the center, the Resurrection of Christ and the Descent into Hell, surrounded by sixteen scenes from the major feasts of the Orthodox Church. The piece is distinguished by the great finesse of its execution, the richness of its composition, its numerous inscriptions in Church Slavonic, and its delicate gold highlights. The highly detailed miniature painting, as well as the complex arrangement of the scenes, are reminiscent of the Palekh tradition. The reverse side retains two reinforcing strips, fragments of old Russian printed paper, and an old sales label bearing lot number 151 and describing the work as “The Resurrection and Descent into Hell, flanked by church feasts, Russian, 19th Century.” In very fine overall condition and largely original, with only slight signs of age and wear.
