“RECUPERATIS LEGIBUS AC LIBERTATE SANCTA SOLENNILIVRE IURANDO REPVBL.”
(“Having recovered the laws and liberty, sanctified by solemn oath of the Republic.”)
Reverse:
Inscription within a laurel wreath:
“OMNIUM BRABANTIAE ORDINUM CONSENSU PRID. CAL. IANVAR. MDCCLXXXIX.”
(“By the consent of all the Estates of Brabant, on the day before the Kalends of January 1789” → December 31, 1789.)
Historical context:
The medal commemorates the Brabant Revolution (1789–1790), when the Estates of Brabant rose against Emperor Joseph II of Austria and proclaimed the short-lived United Belgian States in 1790. The piece symbolizes the recovery of traditional rights and freedoms by solemn oath.
