Émile Guillemin (1841–1907) – Rebecca at the Fountain – 19th-century bronze
An elegant bronze sculpture with a brown patina featuring golden hues, depicting Rebecca at the Fountain, based on a work by the French sculptor Émile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin (1841–1907).
The young woman, dressed in a draped gown in the classical style, stands on a rocky mound, delicately holding a cup in her hand. Her graceful posture, the softness of her face, and the natural movement of her clothing attest to particularly meticulous modeling.
The delicacy of her hair—gathered in a bun and falling in long, wavy strands—as well as the richness of the drapery’s folds, lend this composition great elegance.
The subject is inspired by the biblical episode of Rebecca at the well, a figure of generosity and hospitality.
The sculpture bears the signature “E. Guillemin – BRONZE” on its terrace and features a cartouche on its base bearing the title of the work and the artist’s name.
It rests on a circular pedestal of veined green marble.
