Édouard Goerg (1893–1969) was one of the leading figures of French Expressionism between the two world wars. Trained at the Académie Ranson under Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier, he developed a distinctive artistic vision as early as the 1920s, blending expressive power, poetry, and a critical view of society. His work is now represented in numerous public collections and is the subject of a catalogue raisonné currently in preparation.

This oil painting, created around 1928, belongs to a pivotal period in the artist’s career. The intimate scenes devoted to the female figure occupy a prominent place in this work and already foreshadow the artistic explorations for which Goerg would become renowned. The model, absorbed in her grooming, is rendered with great sensitivity. The forms are simplified, the brushwork is generous, and the subtle palette highlights the modernity of his pictorial style.

The year 1928 marked a decisive turning point in Goerg’s career. He met the prominent art dealer Paul Guillaume, who brought his work to international attention by exhibiting it in Boston and at the Art Institute of Chicago, among other venues. The very next year, in 1929, a major solo exhibition was dedicated to him at the Galerie Georges Bernheim, confirming his place among the most notable French artists of his generation.

This work has a documented provenance. It was acquired from the Galerie Longchamp in Nice and is accompanied by its certificate of authenticity, which dates it to around 1928. It comes from a former private collection in Nice, providing a reassuring history for collectors.

Georg’s work from this period is now particularly sought after. His works from the late 1920s regularly appear in major public auctions and exhibitions dedicated to French modern art. In 2024, a 1928 oil painting, Les Sisters, presented with a provenance and exhibition history, sold for €6,240 at Artcurial, reflecting collectors’ growing interest in this period of his work.

A high-quality work, representative of one of Édouard Goerg’s most inspired periods, combining expressionist vigor with great sensitivity.
