Polychrome Lacquered Pagoda Panel From The Qing Dynasty 19th-century China
This type of lacquered wooden panel, hand-painted in polychrome with gilded highlights on a black background, is of the decorative arts of China’s Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). The scene depicts figures in traditional attire, an Asian pavilion, and gilded decorations on a black background. The design is painted in polychrome lacquer, accented with gold leaf or gilded engraving. On the back of the panel, the Chinese character “本” is visible. This character generally means “origins,” “book,” “root,” or “true,” but it may also be an assembly or identification mark. The holes along the edge and the hinge in the center suggest that this was the panel or door of a lacquered piece of furniture (cabinet, box, secretary desk) or a small tabletop screen/folding screen.
