1888 Advertising Poster Featuring The American War Of Secession For Mccormick Tractors

The poster depicts a detailed scene from the Battle of Atlanta (July 22, 1864) during the American Civil War. It specifically states that the work was "copied with special permission from the panoramic painting on display in Minneapolis."

In the late 19th century, cycloramas (giant panoramic paintings) were hugely popular attractions, and companies purchased the rights to these spectacular historical scenes to capture the public’s attention. At the top of the poster, two McCormick farm machines (a mower and a reaper-binder) are depicted
  • “ PAUL FRANCEY — General Agent for France IN TONNERRE (Yonne),” was the McCormick dealer based in Tonnerre. (Registered in accordance with the Act of Congress in the year 1888, by the McCormick Harvesting Machine Co., at the office of the Librarian of Congress in Washington.)

  • The American Civil War (1861–1865) was a civil war that tore the United States apart between the Union (the Northern states) and the Confederacy (the Southern states). This conflict, the deadliest in American history, was sparked by deep economic divisions and the issue of slavery.
