19th-century Illustrated And Folded, Handwritten Thai Samut Koi
During this period, these illuminations were used to illustrate sacred Buddhist texts (such as the tale of Phra Malai or the Jatakas), royal texts, or cosmological and mythological treatises.
In the background stands a shrine or a pavilion with tiered spires (Prasat or Mondop), featuring pointed roofs in shades of red, green, and dark blue. The Frame: The scene is framed vertically by two decorative bands painted with a traditional Thai plant motif (Lai Thai / scrollwork) in black on a gold/ochre background. The abundant use of gilding (applied gold leaf) on the divine figures’ garments and the architecture is highly representative of the Rattanakosin style.
The traditional gouache pigments of this period (ochre/vermilion reds, matte greens, deep blues) give the painting its velvety, weathered appearance.
